BEGINNINGS

Life has been moving a mile a minute lately and I have got a whole slew of adventures on the horizon. 

Recent conversations with a friend inspired me to write a poem for the first time in a very long time. It was like a dam breaking open. A few weeks later, I decided while sitting at work, drunk on caffeine, to pick up a pen, and my blank notebook began to fill. 

So here we are. I'll be sharing some words and more.

For some people, networking comes naturally. For others, sometimes it just doesn’t.  Though I’ve often been complimented on my “cool-as-a-cucumber” demeanor, I often feel the exact opposite inside. Yet, what this type of feedback has taught me is that, with a few mindful check-ins and a consistent practice of self-compassion, it really is possible to trick others, as well as yourself, into thinking you’re a natural at networking.  If nothing else, it's just a way to practice trusting yourself. And when you come to think of it, that is way more important than any networking event in itself.

I woke up feeling dehydrated and uneasy.  I felt it the second I opened my eyes and the best description, in a word, is INCONVENIENCE!  I believe it was brought on by two weeks of the most relentless anxiety I’ve had in years. It has been strangely physical and incredibly unpredictable, striking at times when I can’t connect it to a specific emotional trigger.  As someone who likes to quickly assess her emotions and understand the how’s and why’s of it all (i.e. CONTROL), it has been frustrating and scary. Not to mention, exhausting. My mind has been racing constantly.  Is it work? The season? The Moon? Is it my hormones, age, excess caffeine?   I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the mental health journey is not linear. It is a road trip full of detours, construction, flat tires and maps that are sometimes perfect and other times lead you to a horrible and unexpected place. The joy of hugs and embraces during this season that our world is in - of separation, quarantines, self-isolation, lock-downs; stirs something inside me. My heart aches for those who feel like they're walking this season alone.  We may be surrounded, even overwhelmed, by much fear, anxiety, longing, grief and discomfort. But these are circumstances that can be endured and overcome, not alone, but together. May we be overwhelmed instead by weaving together through effort, love, action, and hope around the world.  So though a physical hug and touch may not be within reach to those you want to reach out to, stretch your warm words, and wrap a dear friend or even a stranger, in the embrace of your words of kindness and light.  I've been blessed to find mine, seek yours. Let the light of others shine. And if given the opportunity, be the one that holds them up for all to see.
